Men and women -- in writing Apr 2nd, 2004 1:05:45 am EST
Let's draw a comparison, to something that men and women both treat differently: Foreplay. This is an idea that came into my head after reading a very insightful entry over at PussyTalk (http://www.livejournal.com/users/nicebluejournal/). In her post, she describes what she finds as generalities between men and women in their own weblogs, bringing up the difference in how men and women relate different experiences. Consider the simple use of a simple sentence versus the use of a compound/complex sentence, and the success of being able to do so coherently.

English is, I believe to most Americans, a spoken language first and a written language second; we learned this first in practical use before studying it on paper or in books. Our abilities with this wonderfully complex and adaptable language represent everything that we personally feel is of practical value to us, and we learned this through experimentation and positive (and sometimes negative) reinforcement.

Back to foreplay. I find it very interesting in the writing practices between men and women when it comes down to describing sex. I wonder if those whose prose is punchy and direct are also that way in their approach to sex. Do they see foreplay as a necessary description of a scene that must be laid out as a necessary building block of the scene, but should be done quickly in order to get to the objective? And women, with being romantic or sassy (or at times both -- the moody woman), do they sometimes put so much into the romance that they occasionally become clumsy over it, ultimately ruining the mood they are trying so hard to establish with their awkward prose?

And does this self-evaluation of yourself cause you to now second-guess your own entries, as it does me now? I am really an amateur at writing, having the most basic of formal training in English from high school and what English 101 could mean to a college freshman. My instruction in English is very similar to the amount I have received in sexual education, being that I am mostly self-taught and I read voraciously in the topic. However, if you asked me which I was more self-conscious over -- my performance in bed or my ability to write -- I don't know if I could give you an honest answer; it is that personal to me.

being an english major(love grammar and the discoveries of the english language) and a very direct person when it comes to sex, I don't think so for me at least.

The first inspiration for my post was purely physical. Cocks are simply and obviously out there, whereas cunts are much more convoluted and interior. My observations were partly tongue-in-cheek, and I love the way you've run with this into new territory.

I think it's always good to critique our own writing, but please don't worry too much about your style. With a minimum of care and lots of practice, style grows and flowers naturally.

I love your writing style! And bottom line is you are expressing your ideas in a way that grabs you - after all it is your journal and must mean something to you.

Anyways, having said that, I understand the feeling - I almost always second-guess my entries. But I force myself to hit the send key and just put them out there, no matter how bad they might be. I prefer to journal in a flow-of-consciousness way; otherwise its too much like work. And its really about capturing your ideas, thoughts or history for me...

Anyways, I love your stuff and love the way you think things through out loud.

I feel exactly the same way about which i am more self conscious over. And recently i've been self-conscious about my looks too.
